Introduction

Call for Poetry
Submission Deadline: March 21, 2008
The Caribbean/West Indian Poetry Special Issue
For The Journal of Caribbean Literatures,
Publication date:  Summer 2008

Caribbean writers/poets, and non-islanders writing poetry that reflects the culture of the islands, are encouraged to submit their works of poetry to the Journal of Caribbean Literatures. Poems are natural forms of expression that come in a variety of languages, dialects, and styles. All forms can be submitted, and all writers are welcomed to submit their poems. The Caribbean is rich with people who speak Papiamento, Hindi, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Dutch, English, Hakka, Cantonese, Toisan, and without doubt, a variety of other languages and dialects. Music has influenced the way people write, and it is intriguing that this is noticeable in the style of writing.

Submission requirements:

Your name, e-mail address, telephone number, mailing address.

Your brief biography, no longer than ten lines.

Each poetry submission can be from one page to four pages in length, double- spaced. You can submit anywhere from one to six submissions.

The Editorial Board of The Journal of Caribbean Literatures reserves the right to publish the material, as stated in the website.

Original unpublished material is welcomed as it reflects the mission of the JCLs  to support new material in all genres.  Exceptions may be made to invited poets and to new and emerging poets. If we invite poets to submit previously published poems, we will get the permissions to publish from publishers. If published poems for consideration are sent without invitation, however,  the poets must obtain the permissions from their publishers. Please note as well that the preference of the JCLs is that most of the poems in this issue will be original poems, whether from established or new and emerging poets, and said poems will be given priority in this issue.

Topics: There is no limitation on the topic or subject for poets. Keep in mind the proposed title "Caribbean/West Indian Poetry."

Other considerations: If you submit poetry in other languages, e.g., Spanish, French, Hindu, or Dutch, etc. please attach the English translations as well. If you use patios, Papiamento, or other dialects in the poetry, you must provide a glossary.

All poets of all backgrounds who are from, have roots in, or have an interest in the Caribbean are encouraged to submit their works. Please send original and already edited material. Remember that the subject must focus on the Caribbean in some manner.

Creativity, originality and self expression of the poet will be considered as important.

If you have questions: please direct them to the editors.
